Starting a new job for most people is an emotional experience. Shall we say that doubt crosses your mind - 'Have I done the right thing?', 'What if they don't like me? or what if I don't like them?', 'What if their promises aren't lived up to?' to name but a few! Well before you get carried away, lets start by looking at some of the reasons for looking for another job. Undervalued, Underpaid, Under resourced, Missed promotions, Travel/Location, Management Issues.
Sounds familiar? Well these could be just some of the reasons for your move. Now remember moving jobs is something that should not be taken lightly - not that we think you do, but it is important that once a decision is made you focus on the positives. Ask yourself what issues the new role will address, look at these positives and focus on them. Remember if you dwell on negative issuses, these will follow you into your new job. So now you have the right attitude to start a new job, what should you expect on your first day?
Well that obviously depends on the role. Typically your first few days within most companies will consist of orientation - finding your way around your department, meeting fellow members of your team, taking on board objectives, goals and targets. Potentially you may pick up your company car, phone, computer. Alternatively you may go straight onto a training course. But one thing is sure, if you haven't taken the time to assertain what is expected, where to be and at what time, you are bound to get off on the wrong foot! So yet again, don't take things for granted, take the time to clarify the timetable of what is going to happen and when on joining your new employer. Then it will be time to start looking forward to your new career!
